Cherokee Nation on standby to help Moore tornado victims

The Cherokee Nation has offered immediate and ongoing support to victims in the Moore area, following yesterday’s devastating tornadoes. The Cherokee Nation’s emergency management team is organizing tribal resources and is on standby for further direction from those managing the crisis that continues to unfold in central Oklahoma.

Lawmakers Intend to Investigate OSSAA Practices

 

OKLAHOMA CITY – Several state lawmakers have requested approval of a study during the interim to investigate the practices and procedures used by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) in responding to complaints and handling student appeals.

 

The lawmakers asked for the study after hearing from parents from all across the state who are raising questions and expressing frustrations with the methods used by the OSSAA.

 

Cameron Family Loses Mobile Home in Storm

Northwest of Poteau, a family in Cameron lost their mobile home in the severe weather that struck Monday (May 20).

“He was watching the storm out of the window and he told me something just blew across the yard,” said homeowner Brian Johnson. “The skies lit up again and he said I believe that’s our trailer.”

Strong winds in Cameron turned the Johnson family’s mobile home into a pile of wreckage.

“I saw the trailer going across the yard and then out of nowhere it just kind of landed,” said Kealton, Johnson’s son.

Salvation Army Responds to Deadly Tornado

The Salvation Army is on the ground in Moore, Oklahoma with multiple canteens and personnel coordinating with Local and State Emergency Management to serve first responders and those affected by the tornado.    Captain Carlyle Gargis from the Fort Smith Corps arrived Tuesday morning at 8am to serve in the Oklahoma City/Moore area, and the Fort Smith Disaster Services Team is on standby to be sent in as reinforcements as this will be a long-term endeavor.

Strong Winds Tear Roofs from LeFlore County Businesses

Residents in Poteau, Okla. are cleaning up after a possible tornado hit Monday evening (May 20).

The storm was strong enough to rip the roof off an auto parts store and move it to a building next door on Rogers street.

As winds moved through glass from buildings downtown were shattered leaving glass on sidewalks and roads in downtown Poteau.  Many trees were uprooted and several homes had roof damage.
